Mailbag Monday: Favorite Wine?

Dear Alleigh—
I discovered you through DC Blogs, and really like your site.  I was trying to figure out what your favorite wine is, but can’t really tell from your reviews.  What’s your favorite?

First, welcome to you and all of the other DC Blogs readers that found me through last week’s “DC Blogs Noted.”  I hope you all will stick around.  And, special thanks to The Restaurant Refugee for the shout out!  It was unexpected, but appreciated.

As for my favorite wine, besides saying whatever wine is in my glass, I know this is going to sound like a copout, but I don’t have a consistent favorite.  I feel picking a favorite wine would be like parents picking favorites among their children.  Not to say it doesn’t happen, but it just feels wrong to vocalize.  That said, I’ll do my best.

With white wines, oddly enough, the ones I enjoy the most are the ones I tend to review the least.  If I see a good Verdejo or Grüner Veltliner on a restaurant wine list, I will almost always order it over before anything else, but I’ve only reviewed a handful of each.  Clearly, I need to change that, as both are affordable varietals that would be perfect for “A Glass After Work.”

My red wine favorite is a little more concrete.  If money wasn’t an obstacle, hands-down, I’m a Châteauneuf-du-Pape girl.  Since the ones I truly adore tend to be above my price range, and certainly not something I would drink as “A Glass After Work,” I don’t indulge in them often.  On the more affordable end of the spectrum, 100% Carmenère is usually my first choice.  They’re hard to come by, so I don’t enjoy them often, but the good ones are always like drinking delicious, luscious velvet.

All in all, though, those preferences are probably not obvious from my blog because if I stick to the wines I feel most comfortable with, then I would never discover new  gems…and would close myself off to the possibility of finding a new favorite.

Cheers!
