Mailbag Monday: Chocolate Wine

Hey Alleigh:
What’s your opinion of chocolate wine?

So, I’m a little ashamed to admit that I seem to have a mental block when it comes to dessert wines.  Most of the time I enjoy them, particularly during my occasional splurge on Sauternes and fried chicken, but they don’t tend to be the type of wine I go out buy for myself.  It’ something I’m trying to work on, and I have three bottles of dessert wines in my review line-up to help with that, but it definitely requires a bit of a thought process shift for me.

That all said, I’ve enjoyed the chocolate wines I’ve had…at least in small quantities. I usually only enjoy a single glass because of how sweet the wines are, but how can you really go wrong with wine and chocolate?

For folks in the DC Metro area (or who live in AK, FL, NC, MD, MN, NM, VA, CA, MO), Virginia’s Cooper Vineyards makes a nice chocolate wine, Noche, that I tasted at a wine festival a couple of years ago and enjoyed.  It’s actually made with the Norton grape and is infused with chocolate, so it has a good mix of berries and cocoa.  Not surprisingly, it tends to be one of their more popular wines (according to the man who did our tasting).

Cheers!
