After a wonderful, week-long vacation at the beach and a whirlwind 3 days learning about Spanish wines, I’m back to reality (and blogging). The sad news is that I’m not independently wealthy, so I had to come back, but the great news is that I have a lot to share.
A little over a week ago, Hubby and I left DC and headed to the Outer Banks for a week. We rented a small, oceanfront house in Duck, NC with the intention of reading, swimming, eating, drinking, and relaxing the week away…and we definitely did all that. Our first full day on the beach was all about being beach bums. We were on the beach by 10am and didn’t leave until dinnertime. It was perfect—perfect weather, perfect water, and perfect people-watching. After leaving the beach, we went out for a somewhat bland and slightly overpriced-for-the-quality dinner at Red Sky Cafe. I admit that I was disappointed because I’d heard good things about the restaurant, but it happens. As soon as we came home, Hubby and I went back to relaxing. I grabbed my chilled 2007 La Rocca Gavi before heading out to the porch to spend my evening reading my book and drinking wine.
The 2007 La Rocca Gavi (winery) was made from 100% Cortese grapes. The wine had a beautiful, medium lemon color. On the nose, there were a lot of citrus, mostly grapefruit, aromas. There was also a hint of white chalk dust, wet stone, and something that was surprisingly yeasty. In the mouth, the wine was full of citrus fruits—lime, lemon, and grapefruit. There was also a hint of fresh straw and wet stone. The La Rocca had a light-to-medium body and a lime-like acidity.
Is this worth a glass after work? Definitely! If you see this wine in the store, grab it; you won’t be disappointed. At $18, this is a great summer wine. It’s fresh and crisp, while offering something a little different from the usual suspects of summer whites. While I didn’t drink it with food, the La Rocca was very enjoyable on its own. It paired perfectly with sitting on the porch in an Adirondack chair, enjoying the sunset, and listening to the sound of the ocean surf.

A week veggin out in Duck sounds great. Our family was just down there last week as well… if you noticed any extremely rowdy, loud, disruptive people, that was likely a relative of mine.
Looking forward to the Spanish Wine Class recap… I really wanted to attend that class, but work travel made it impossible to make it.
Frank…that's too funny about your family. We actually both ran into several people from work (on the beach and at the restaurants), so it was clearly a big weekend to be down there.
Damn wok getting in the way of the class. I'm hoping to post about the wine class this weekend. I have so many notes to go through, but you should definitely think about it for next year. Well worth it!
Too funny-We were vacationing in the Outer Banks all last week in between Duck and Corolla. It was Hot! Did you happen to visit Roanoke Island and Jockey's Ridge? My sons and I wanted to hang-glide and feel a little like the Wright brothers, but it was way to hot to climb up that huge dune.
